Patrick Hoyt replied to Glenn Davis's discussion Zenith ch650 engine
"Hey Steve. I put some performance numbers out on zenith.aero a while back. My airplane is an XL with a 650 canopy. About 210 hours on the airframe, and about 30 hours on my V130 engine.

I haven't calculated my fuel burn yet, but it's pretty good. I…"

"Here's a picture of my current startup checklist. It has evolved over the years, and I re-write it every time I add something new. I try to keep it very simple.
Before flight I check that the engine runs on either Fuel Pump alone, and on either Batt…"

"The only thing that might possibly be ethanol-related that I've found on the Zenith planes is the fuel tank caps (and it's possible that the new ones are better than the ones they were selling 10 years ago).
The cylindrical "pathway" within which th…"

"Is there a recommended idle speed for Viking 130 ground operations...?
I know that if you idle too low you get some gearbox chatter which people are quick to tell you about.

"Hey Guys, what RPM are you setting your Idle at, on the 130...?
I need to work on shortening my landing distance in my 601XL (got the short takeoff working pretty good).

"Changed my gear box vent reservior yesterday from the plastic one to the aluminum one.
Swapped the location of the Gearbox Temperature probe from the left hole to the right, which allows for routing of the vent lines.
Although I used Fuel Injection…"

"Hi Scott.  When I bought my engine (at Oshkosh) it had a piece bolted onto it that mated up to an ordinary engine stand.  I sent that piece back to Viking when I got back home with my engine.  When I jacked mine up, using an engine hoist, I hooked o…"

"Is it possible that you are actually setting it far higher than 15.5 degrees...?  I actually take the prop off the aircraft to very accurately set the pitch on my workbench.  Or is it possible that you are measuring Prop RPM instead of Engine RPM...…"

"Scott, I'm using the three-bladed 68" Whirlwind prop on my 601.  Pitch settings follow.  Speeds are "indicated air speed":
At 19 degrees of pitch I'm seeing 111mph at 5,100 rpm, and 126mph at 6,000 rpm.At 20 degrees of pitch I'm seeing 118mph at 5,1…"

"Jan, what rpm do you cruise at on cross country flights with your Viking 130...?  I'm still working on dialing in the proper pitch settings for my prop.
Also, I've noticed on the Viking View that when I exceed 5,100 rpm, a speed warning appears (it…"

"The Viking 130 really wakes up the Zodiac airframe.  Am enjoying this engine.  Flew 4 out of the last 5 days (only poor weather kept me on the ground today)."

"I flew a 601XL with an O-235 once.  It felt heavy.  I've only flown my own airplane behind the Viking once so far, so I can't be very authoratative on that combination yet, but for what it's worth I had two Corvairs on it, and the Viking feels light…"
