Van's RV-7 and Viking 180 HP

Has anyone put a Viking engine on a Van's RV-7 model?  Interested in the outcome, performance and obstacles.  Traditionally they only use Lycoming type engines.  Very curious about a Van's/Viking combo.  Please weigh in here if you can.

Thanks!

  • I have a viking HD gearbox which I like very much on a 1.8L honda engine running on a test stand that is about to migrate over to my RV6a. I have an extensive thread on VAF in the Alternative Engines section. Charlie
  • Are there any responses at all to this question?
  • My guess is no, the 180 hp turbo has only been available since 2017. I bought one of the first ones to install on my Zenith 801. Like me, you will need to design / improvise / fabricate engine mounts, cowling, ducting. That in itself isn't entirely a bad thing, that is the intent of experimental aircraft.
    • Close but not 100% correct. The firewall forward setup of the Zenith SD has flown for one 1.5 years in a Cruzer and now successfully for 6 months in a CH-750 SD. For any popular kit aircraft, like an RV-6 or 7, a firewall package is easy to manufacture. The Vans RV-9 is perfect for the Viking 130
  • Hi Steve. I now have about 80 hours of flight with my RV-9A. See my report on my RV-9A here: https://vikingaircraftengines.ning.com/forums/viking-110-rv-9a-phas...
    Viking 110 RV-9A Phase 1 completed: 47 hrs
This is a Viking 110 RV-9A  with Phase 1 completed. First flight was little more than a year ago: Feb. 4, 2016. Charts show max TAS of 146 mph so far…

I am trying to figure out how the radiator should be installed.  The radiator does not have the 2 ports on the very front as the Viking 130's radiator does.  Instead, one faces strait up in the center (In the way of the nose gear) and the other is o…
